Design Lab was founded in 2012 with the aim of developing future media, products, and spaces. It currently operates as part of the Koç University – Arçelik Research Center for Creative Industries (KUAR). Research at the Design Lab is interdisciplinary, conducted in collaboration with other departments within Koç University, primarily engineering and psychology. Design Lab presently consists of two research groups focusing on Design Innovation and Interactive Information Design. Current research focuses broadly on human-computer interaction, user interface design and usability; and more specifically on gesture-based human-computer intefaces, haptic user interfaces, interaction techniques for novel displays, geographical systems and information visualization for disabling environments. Our projects aim to develop novel technologies and methodologies that add value to related industries, primarily in Türkiye.

Microstructure Evolution Laboratory (MEL)

Microstructure Evolution Laboratory (MEL) group is founded in 2013. The research activities are focused mainly on fundamental aspects of solidification science, with an emphasis on multiphase growth-front dynamics. This includes the study of out-of-equilibrium pattern formation in alloy solidification fronts, crystal growth dynamics, crystal-melt and crystal-crystal interfacial phenomena, morphological evolution during phase transformations, and the effect of anisotropy on pattern formation. Work includes state-of the-art experimental methods for real-time and post-mortem investigation of metallic and transparent organic systems as well as magmasoft and phase-field simulations. Research plans include continued investigation on the microstructure evolution dynamics and to use this fundamental knowledge to control structure and properties in the resulting multiphase materials, create new solidification processes and alloys, and reveal new applications for solidified structures.

Current projects of the group are focused on microstructure evolution of eutectic alloys under controlled solidification conditions. These projects are funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), European Commision (EC), and European Space Agency (ESA).

KOÇ-IBM Supply Chain Research Center

Supply chain management is the process of planning, implementing, and controlling the operations of the complex supply chain network that includes suppliers, production centers, distribution centers, retailers and customers with the purpose to satisfy customer requirements as efficiently as possible. Supply chain management includes the planning and management of all activities involved in sourcing, procurement, and logistics management activities as well as the coordination and collaboration with channel partners, which can be suppliers, intermediaries, third-party service providers, and customers.

The goal of the Koç-IBM Supply Chain Research Center that is founded by Prof.Dr. Metin Türkay is to develop novel approaches to supply chain management and logistics that include consideration of sustainability aspects in addition to traditional financial considerations. The modeling approaches and solution algorithms developed in the center are applied in a number of projects to determine their feasibility and potential benefits. In addition, one of the activities of the center is to prepare new course contents that are taught at universities world-wide to promote this approach to sustainability.
